Guardians of the Galaxy turned into one of Marvel’s most successful films, but before its release the movie set away from the rest of the established MCU, and filled with mostly obscure characters, was seen as something of a risk. Those elements proved to be a highlight for the film, however, and the franchise gave audiences an introduction to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel)....

Daveed Diggs is in high demand right now. One of 2016’s biggest cinematic success stories across all genres was undoubtedly Deadpool. The Ryan Reynolds-led tale of an ordinary mercenary whose face is transformed into a topographical map of Utah turned the superhero genre on its head with extra doses of wit, humor and violence and made 20th Century Fox a ton of cash in the process. The DC Comics Rebirth event is starting today, and some shocking reveals are already coming down the pipeline. The event appears to be trying to find a balance between nostalgia and progress, and for now it seems to have DC fans pretty excited. One place that Rebirth is playing up the balance between progression and nostalgia is in its marketing. A Rebirth splash page has been revealed that is a definite throwback to days gone by, even though it acknowledges some more modern parts of the DC lineup....

Declining iTunes sales highlighted by Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty and reported by Fortune appear to underline the need for Apple to move beyond sales of music downloads and into the subscription music business. iTunes sales are down 24 percent year-on-year. The complete cast for Birds of Prey reveals Chris Messina’s addition as DC Comics villain Victor Zsasz. After Margot Robbie broke out in her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. and DC Films have selected Birds of Prey to be her next appearance. The movie will once again team Harley up with other DC characters, but it will be an entirely different set up this time. Birds of Prey will pair Harley with DC heroines Black Canary and Huntress....

With Deadpool 2 fast approaching theaters, fans have been bombarded with marketing images of the Merc with a Mouth’s team of fellow mutants joining him in battle against Cable. That team is the X-Force, originally created by Rob Liefeld to be a kind of middle ground between the X-Men and Magneto. The X-Force has changed a lot over the years, but the lineup to be seen in the new film will feature Deadpool (obviously), Domino, Bedlam, Zietgeist, Shatterstar, Peter, and possibly Surge....

Rejected test footage for FX’s now-canceled animated Deadpool TV show has leaked to the internet. Atlanta creator Donald Glover was tapped to develop Deadpool for FX before suddenly exiting the show due to “creative differences.” Archer animation house Floyd County would have been responsible for bringing the series to life, with Glover and his brother Stephen acting as showrunners. FX remains in league with Marvel of course, with Legion season 2 set to debut on the network soon....
