Today is the day that the Season of Opulence officially releases in Destiny 2, and fans have been waiting with bated breath for the new content. Now, it looks like everyone’s patience is about to be rewarded; there’s been a leak of what people are calling the next expansion in the series — Destiny 2 Shadowkeep.
While the conversation around the game has recently been dominated by the upcoming season, this leak of Destiny 2 Shadowkeep comes at a time where Bungie has indicated that they have big plans to share about the property’s future. The game has been fairly quiet on the rumor front ever since earlier in the year where Bungie’s plan for upcoming content and Destiny 3 were leaked by someone close to a famous Destiny 2 leaker, but all that appears to have changed overnight.
It now appears that Destiny 2 Shadowkeep has now leaked, and it is purportedly a new expansion instead of being a part of the existing Season of Opulence trajectory planned out for the game’s third year. Forbes has reported on the leak which is now doing the rounds on Twitter, citing a Resetera thread where users have speculated that is more than just an addition to the seasonal content. The leaked graphic, which suggests that players would be returning to Earth’s abandoned moon, appears to have been obtained through datamining PC files, but so far there has been no independent corroboration of its accuracy. It also mentions the “next chapter” in the Destiny 2 experience, which is a callback of sorts to Bungie’s news that it would announce a “new era for Bungie” and the game.
Unsurprisingly, none of the leaked information has been corroborated yet by Bungie, and at this stage Destiny 2 Shadowkeep remains a rumor still. After all, the company remained tight-lipped earlier this year when there were Destiny 3 leaks on the horizon which spanned everything from the potential plot to the future game catering more for hardcore players than casuals. However, it’s important to note that the datamined leak does specifically seem to be linked to the Season of Opulence; the Season of Opulence will have players facing off against the Shadows of Earth, and the Shadowkeep image is clearly signposting a return to the planet.
Ever since Bungie parted ways with Activision, it was assumed that the company would be able to take more time to work on its plans for Destiny 2. A full-fledged expansion hot on the heels of the Season of Opulence is unexpected, and it would be a bold move from the company in potentially teeing up its next steps for the rumored Destiny 3. That being said, it’s still worth paying some attention to this rumor on the grounds that content of this size and scope lines up well with what Bungie has been teasing as the next step in the franchise’s journey. The company is also on track to make an announcement soon about its upcoming plans for the abovementioned next era of Destiny 2, so it will be interesting to see if this leak ends up panning out.
