The explosion, fire, and oil spill, resulting from the blowout at the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in 2010, is considered one of the largest accidental marine oil spills to date - and the worst man-made disaster in human history. As a result of the explosion, 11 workers lost their lives, while another 17 were injured. More than 200 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days, affecting the coastlines of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida and reportedly resulting in the deaths of more than 8,000 animals. To this day, the event remains a heated point of political and environmental controversy.
The disaster, now known as the BP Oil Spill, has inspired the movie, Deepwater Horizon, which will dramatize the events leading up to the fateful event. The film, set to hit theaters in the United States on September 30th, 2016, will reunite director Peter Berg (who helmed 2013’s Lone Survivor) with actor Mark Wahlberg, who also starred in the well-received military drama.
A few months ago, Lionsgate dropped the first trailer for Deepwater Horizon, which introduces Wahlberg’s character, Mike Williams, the real-life electrician who survived the catastrophe and later testified to the corporate corruption largely responsible for the blowout. Now, a second trailer for the film has been released, which highlights Wahlberg’s fight for survival. Right off the bat, the new trailer establishes Wahlberg (as Williams) as a family man, who promises to bring his daughters a deep-sea fossil.
Following the introduction, the new Deepwater Horizon trailer then cuts to wide, breathtaking shots of the oil rig at sea, conveying the sense that he is walking into an impressive, yet isolating situation. Then, one minute in, the disaster strikes, effectively communicated on a personal level as Williams’ video chat with his family cuts out. The trailer’s song (the slow-to-build, yet pulsing Eye of the Storm by X Ambassadors) plays over quieter sequences of bloodied workers, fumbling through the rig’s dark, narrow hallways and battling their way through fires - a juxtaposition meant to enthrall viewers, while at the same time making them uncomfortable.
Beyond the contentious news headlines, political fallout, and environmental devastation associated with the accident, the Deepwater Horizon story, at its core, is a very human tale that follows the ordinary men and women who had to fight for their lives in the midst of tragedy. Based on this second trailer, Wahlberg looks like he will deliver on this true tale of everyday heroism, while bringing audiences along for an explosive, nail-biting ride.
Along with Wahlberg, Deepwater Horizon stars John Malkovich as a BP executive, Dylan O’Brien and Kurt Russell as fellow rig workers, Gina Rodriguez as female lead Andrea Fleytas, and Kate Hudson as Wahlberg’s wife.
Deepwater Horizon will hit U.S. theaters on September 30th, 2016.
