Hideo Kojima has hinted Death Stranding’s multiplayer will be similar to the way Miles Morales interacts with other Spider-people in the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Death Stranding, announced at E3 2016, is Kojima’s first game post-employment at Konami and purports itself to be an entirely new type of video game, which Kojima has called “action/strand gameplay” in much the same way Metal Gear Solid was dubbed “tactical espionage action” when it was first released.

Although multiple cinematic trailers and a recent Gamescom gameplay video have given players vague ideas of what Death Stranding will be like, much of the game still remains a mystery. Starring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo del Toro, and many others, Kojima’s PlayStation 4 exclusive is also known to feature babies that connect players to the afterlife and a survival mechanic that includes the need to urinate.

As reported by MP1st, Kojima recently sat down for a one one one interview with French reporter Julien Chiéze and discussed some of the finer points of Death Stranding’s multiplayer mode. While characteristically cryptic in his answers, Kojima did hint at a system for other players to connect with each other in-game and compared it to the way characters from different dimensions interact in the recent film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

“Sam is just by himself and must survive,” Kojima said, speaking of the main character portrayed by Reedus. “The more you play, the more you will notice that he is not the only one in this situation.” He went on to state the multiplayer mode of Death Stranding would be analogous to the way Miles Morales at first thought there was only one Spider-Man, but then later on learns he is not alone after all. “It’s a clue towards what the game is about. Sorry, but I really can’t say any more, is that okay?” In the past, Death Stranding’s multiplayer has been described as asynchronous, meaning players will not be able to interact with each other directly.

If the game does indeed include multiple dimensions or alternate realities, perhaps this means players will be able to leave hints and messages for each other like in Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Or, if we take Kojima’s statements about Spider-Man at face value, maybe multiple versions of Norman Reedus will have to work together in order to save the world at some point. As the release date for Death Stranding draws closer, it seems like every new piece of information gleaned from the game only leads to more questions, and while recent leaks have given us insight as to what our protagonist’s main goal might be there’s still much, much more that we don’t know.
