One of the final - and most difficult - boss fights of Death Stranding is the BT whale. This guide will help players make easier work of it.

Toward the end of Death Stranding, Sam must deliver cryptobiotes to Capital Knot City to help Fragile recover from teleporting so many people through the Beach and across the UCA. The extinction event is hanging over everyone’s heads and is closer than ever, meaning that Timefall is more common, and BTs are even more unpredictable and dangerous. Because Fragile is incapable of helping Sam teleport, he must physically make the journey from the west to Capital Knot City.

There’s just one big problem: as Sam reaches the edge of Capital Knot City, a giant floating whale appears, one that can do a lot of damage. Unfortunately, Sam cannot just avoid the whale and jump away from the tar to escape the problem. Instead, he must stand his ground and fight. This, unfortunately, is no simple task. Here’s how to beat the whale outside Capital Knot City…

How To Easily Beat Death Stranding’s Whale BT Boss

The first thing Sam needs to consider when taking on the whale is weapons. The whale is continuously moving, leaping into the air and back into the tar. This means that semi-automatic and automatic weapons are more accurate, but they don’t do a lot of damage. Although grenade launchers are slower to use, they are the best weapon to defeat this boss, as they cause considerably more damage. The key is aiming for the whale’s underbelly on its torso while it’s in the air: if Sam hits these areas, the whale takes on more damage. Sometimes, the whale will also open its mouth: take that opportunity to fire a grenade down its throat for an even better hit.

Another challenge is that the whale will continue to try to drown Sam in tar. If that happens, Sam will die and must repatriate. To avoid this, run to the closest structure and climb it. The key is to try to stay out of the tar as much as possible. It’s not as easy this time, though, as in previous similar situations. When the whale dives back into the tar, get as far away as possible, because every structure within its vicinity will sink. It’s also important not to stand in the tar for too long when the whale is in it: otherwise, the whale will rise and eat Sam.

Fortunately, Sam has help. The white avatars will appear and throw out blood bags and weapons, making sure that Sam stays equipped to continue fighting. Of course, most of these items land in the tar, so Sam must grab them quickly and get back on a structure before drowning,

The key to defeating the whale is to keep moving and grabbing weapons and blood bags. Fire at the whale when it’s in the air, and eventually, it will go down. After, Sam can enter Capital Knot City, where Fragile and the others are waiting.
