Deadpool is one of the biggest hits of 2016 so far, and has the potential to be one of the biggest Marvel-based hits based on domestic gross alone. A sequel is already moving forward, featuring the time-traveling mutant Cable and possibly setting up future films such as an R-rated X-Force.

James Corden of The Late Late Show on CBS has a few ideas about what Deadpool really needs, however. He recently talked it over with Ryan Reynolds, trying with mixed results to convince him that he could sum up what Deadpool was missing with one word: Sidekick.

In a skit for The Late Late Show, Corden discusses Deadpool’s success with Reynolds and tries to sell him on the idea of a sidekick for the Merc with a Mouth. Reynolds tells him that Deadpool is more of a solo act, but this doesn’t stop Corden from trying to pitch several increasingly (bad) sidekick options. All seems hopeless, until Reynolds comes up with an idea of his own; the clip ends with a fake teaser for Double Deadpool, a sequel that would star Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and James Corden as… a shorter, chubbier Deadpool. Corden confirmed that it was actually Reynolds in the Deadpool costume, too, as did Reynolds with a picture posted on Twitter.

While the idea of Deadpool teaming up with another version of himself was played for laughs in the skit, it’s not exactly the first time that it’s happened. Much like Batman’s Bat Family, Deadpool has been known to associate with a “Deadpool Family” known as the Deadpool Corps that’s made up of the Deadpools of alternate dimensions from time to time. There was a Deadpool Family comic published by Marvel back around 2011 that followed the adventures of ‘Pools such as Ladypool, Kidpool, Headpool and Dogpool. He’s also been a member of several teams (including the Avengers Unity Squad, X-Force and Thunderbolts) and has had team-ups with everyone from Spider-Man to Hydra Bob to Hellcow and even Galactus.

Given the tendency for Deadpool to break the fourth wall, it would be funny to see some reference to this skit come up in Deadpool 2. While it’s not likely to happen, it would be a great mod toward the first movie’s marketing to have Deadpool and Cable be at odds and then hear ‘Pool quip that maybe he just should have gone with Strawberry Short-Fuse after all. Oh well… we can dream, can’t we?

Of course, there are likely a lot of fans glad that we won’t see the likes of Ravey Crockett or The Iceman (no, not the one from the X-Men) in the Deadpool sequel. A Cable team-up was confirmed by Deadpool himself, but beyond that we have no idea who we’ll see in Deadpool 2. Cameos are sure to abound, though, especially given how many Easter eggs and brief cameos we saw in the first movie.

Deadpool is now in theaters. X-Men: Apocalypse will hit theaters on May 27, 2016; Gambit sometime in 2017; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; and an unannounced X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development. We’ll let you know when Deadpool 2 gets an official release date.
