In the months leading up to the release of Deadpool, there was no small amount of anticipation and hype. The marketing campaign for the film was nothing short of phenomenal, enticing dedicated fans everywhere to turn up and see their beloved Merc With a Mouth administer justice in his own hilarious and twisted way.
As a February release, the film was expected to do well enough, but there was still a degree of uncertainty as to how it would perform overall. When the initial dust settled, however, Deadpool’s success went well beyond the expectations of box office analysts and even the most ardent of fans. The film was (and continues to be) a certified hit – almost a month into its release.
To commemorate this one-month landmark, Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool crew have put together a special little trailer for fans old, new, and still soon to be. The low-fi video, titled “Regenerate the Meowgic” and hashtagged as a “Monthiversary” milestone, can be viewed above and is something of a must-see.
The trailer comes in at a lightning-quick 32 seconds, but as anyone who’s familiar with Deadpool knows, that’s more than enough time to get some solid chuckles out of people. With lines like “Deadpool – the several times in a lifetime experience guaranteed to make your whole family pregnant” spoken over crummy, bootleg-quality footage from the film and scored with delicate flute playing, it’s hard not to be lured into the same sort of fun that drove the film’s success. It’s difficult to believe only a month has passed since Deadpool crushed box-office records, hauling in over $680 million worldwide and becoming the third-highest grossing R-rated film in American history. Things keep moving forward for Deadpool (including a sequel) and the “Monthiversary” video is a quick but hilarious reminder of that fact.
All joking in the video aside, it makes sense to see Reynolds & Co. wanting to keep people’s attention focussed on Deadpool. In just two weeks time (as of this writing), Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit theatres and Fox wants to give their scrappy little fighter a chance at keeping its head above the ensuing DC tidal wave.
Deadpool’s success has sparked a greater discussion regarding R-rated superhero movies, which could usher in a new era of comic book entertainment. Whatever the future brings for adult-oriented superhero films, things are looking quite secure for Deadpool. The past month alone has been enough to secure Ryan Reynolds’ spot in the driver’s seat of his long-gestating passion project and fans are already hyped over thoughts of not just the sequel’s arrival, but also its upcoming marketing campaign.
Deadpool is now in theaters; X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27, 2016; Gambit sometime in 2017; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; and an unannounced X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 are also in development. X-Force is rumored and should enter development soon.
