In his own twisted and unhinged way, Marvel’s Deadpool, a.k.a. Wade Wilson is quite the sympathetic character. Having been stricken down by a host of cancerous tumours, Wilson signed on for some experimental treatment by way of a rather shady government run genetic research facility. The end result was of course, Deadpool – the accelerated healing, smartass mercenary, otherwise known as the Merc With a Mouth.
By all logical accounts, fans should be repulsed by Deadpool’s penchant for violence and mayhem, but his past history, hideous complexion, and genuine desire to right the wrongs that have been done to him tend to keep negative opinions at bay. What’s more, his sarcastic and downright silly personality has a tendency to gradually allow people to warm to him.
As time passes and the upcoming 20th Century Fox Deadpool stand-alone movie edges ever closer to its February release date, fans have been treated to a host of little reveals about what exactly is in store for them. The 12 Days of Deadpool brought a new treat every day in the December lead-up to the latest trailer. Meanwhile, a recent interview with Serbian actor Stefan Kapicic (who plays Colossus) gave us all a little more insight into how exactly that character will be different from appearances in previous X-Men movies. In keeping with these continuous tasty little bits of info, Deadpool’s runtime has been revealed, thanks to the Spanish 20th Century Fox website.
At present, the website has the runtime listed as 106 minutes (that’s 1 hour and 46 minutes). Given that the Spanish site is owned and operated by Fox, and given that Fox is the studio behind the Deadpool movie, it’s safe to say that this running time is accurate. That being said, mistakes can always happen and at present there has been no direct confirmation from the studio.
In addition to the Spanish Fox site providing the film’s runtime, they’ve also offered a new look at Deadpool’s first international poster, which you can see below. The poster itself isn’t new, but it is the first time we’ve seen words used to describe the Deadpool movie in any language other than English. Proof if ever it was needed that the Merc With a Mouth still has that characteristic charm no matter what the language. There are also three images (via CBM) that offer a good look at Deadpool doing what he does best, as well as one of Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlyle.
If Deadpool’s runtime does end up being confirmed at 106 minutes, that will make it one of the shorter films in the Marvel canon. This certainly should not be seen as a problematic or even as negative aspect; a shorter running time can often be evidence of a tighter, more succinct story, rather than an ambling and bloated epic. Given the pace at which the trailers we’ve seen thus far have careened along, the movie is by all accounts a fast one – both in runtime and overall momentum – an attribute that couldn’t possibly better suit a character like Deadpool.
Deadpool opens in theaters on February 12, 2016, followed by X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016; Gambit sometime in 2017; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; and some as-yet unspecified X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
