WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2 is stuffed to the brim with cameos and in-jokes but one appearance from the X-Men apparently had a much different and dirtier take. Early on in Deadpool 2, Wade Wilson is taken to the X-Men mansion by Colossus. It is one of the more somber moments in the movie as Deadpool is still mourning the death of Vanessa. Yet it also contains one of the movie’s more effective in-jokes.

In a callback to the original film, Deadpool laments that no X-Men can be found in the mansion but Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and new addition, Yukio. The film immediately cuts away to the entire cast of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, as they slowly shut the door blocking out Deadpool. It’s quiet, family-friendly and a very X-Men-like reaction, but it apparently could’ve been much raunchier.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, X-Men actor Evan Peters explained the moment:

When pressed about some of those alternate takes, Peters was very reluctant to give anything up. He did admit though that the cameos Deadpool 2 didn’t use were “fun” and “dirty,” though he wouldn’t divulge how exactly. However, considering it was apart of Deadpool 2, there’s probably no limit to what could’ve happened. The dirtier takes could’ve been something as simple as the X-Men flipping Deadpool off, not Beast demurely closing the door. It could’ve also been something much more lewd. Unless the deleted cameos are released as part of the Blu-ray or the potential extended cut of Deadpool 2, fans will probably never know.

We were shooting [X-Men: Dark Phoenix], and were like, ‘Okay, we’re going to do a quick thing for Deadpool 2.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s awesome!’ I thought it was going to be at the end of the film, in the credits, like some sort of funny Easter egg thing. And we had a lot of different versions for when they open that door and turn to us. But the one they used was pretty chill, and was in the first half of the film, which I was like, ‘Oh, Jesus, that’s kind of weird.’

The rest of Peters’ explanation does make some slight sense of the cameo as it relates to the X-Men universe’s timeline. It’s been heavily implied that the Deadpool movies take place in modern day as most pop culture references have been very current. Yet the X-Men team that shows up in the cameo exists in the ’90s to the early ’00s. If taken literally, the cameo means that Deadpool 2 takes place about 20 years before anyone assumed. But since the cast was filming Dark Phoenix, this explains why they showed up and not an older version of the X-Men team.

Ultimately, though, the cameo shouldn’t be anything more than a cameo. It’s best not to think of Deadpool too much as he relates to the X-Men. Outside of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who have been used brilliantly, Deadpool doesn’t need the X-Men. Deadpool is its own independent franchise at this point, no matter if it still takes place in the X-Men universe. Colossus and Negasonic are more Deadpool characters than X-Men ones at this point, at least in the movies.

Even if there are some dirtier ways of how the X-Men blocked out Wade in Deadpool 2, it’s best to just take the cameo at face value. The X-Men just don’t want anything to do with Wade Wilson in Deadpool 2. Despite the character’s somewhat heroic turn at the end of the movie, that’s the way things should stay.
