Deadpool stands as one of the funniest and most memorable superhero movies in recent memory on the strength of its writing and diverse cast. Down to the cameos and bit characters, the performance of Ryan Reynolds and the surrounding supporting players helped bring Deadpool’s punched-up script thrillingly and hilariously to life.

Some of Deadpool’s most amusing one-liners and exchanges came from the title character and Dopinder (Karan Soni), the hapless taxi driver who finds himself caught in the middle of a fight between Deadpool and a bunch of villainous goons. The character pops up in a handful of scenes throughout the movie’s partially nonlinear narrative, even revealing some details about his own life. Get ready for potentially even more cryptic love triangles and crisp high fives, because it sounds like Soni is ready to reprise his role in Deadpool 2.

In a new Facebook Live interview with Nerdist (via ComicBook), Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick confirmed that the character of Dopinder will return in 2018’s Deadpool 2 in some capacity. Wernick revealed the return of Dopinder when he opened up about the character, whose scenes he cited as some of his favorites in the movie. Wernick and Reese also joked about Dopinder getting his own spinoff movie from Deadpool.

Despite the kidding around, the writers sure seem satisfied with how the character turned out and would be happy to include him in the “Deadpool core” moving forward. Here’s how Wernick revealed Dopinder’s presence in Deadpool 2:

Wernick and Reese’s work on the script was one of the biggest factors in Deadpool’s success and one of the biggest reasons the movie is getting a surprising amount of recognition in awards season. The scenes between Deadpool and Dopinder were exemplary of the title character’s knack for comic interplay between himself and the other people he meets and interacts with throughout the movie. Dopinder’s return in Deadpool 2, even if it’s just a brief cameo, will be a welcome appearance.

“I would say that the relationship between Dopinder and Deadpool was the most fun for me. … I love that relationship and I love that character. And he’ll be in the sequel.”

In the case of Deadpool 2, the sequel certainly has a lot to live up to with the original. Despite the abundance of hysterical one-liners and memorable conversations between Deadpool and Dopinder, the movie also thrived because of its furious pacing and spectacular action and visual effects. Deadpool 2 will again need all of those elements working together to be as great or successful as the original Deadpool, but the return of Dopinder certainly has a chance to create more memorable moments.
