Deadpool 2’s team considered including Chris Evans as the Fantastic Four’s Human Torch. Although the actor is best known for playing Captain America, that isn’t his only superhero role. Evans played Johnny Storm in 2005’s Fantastic Four and its sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer.
The role didn’t do wonders for Evans, but he managed to overcome the films and embark on a journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It took half a decade, but Evans’ redemption came in playing Steve Rogers in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and then again in several sequels and team-up films. Evans has managed to wipe away nearly all memory of his superhero debut. However, Deadpool 2 wanted to bring the actor and his Fantastic Four character back in a big and hilarious way.
In an interview with Uproxx, Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick explained that they considered including Chris Evans as The Human Torch in the X-Force interviews. Deadpool 2 will see Wade Wilson form the superhero group The X-Force, after interviewing a number of potential recruits. Wade’s interview process is one of the big comedic set pieces of the film; it’s where Rob Delaney’s Peter first shows up. Unfortunately, the scene was never shot, and it wasn’t because Chris Evans said no. Reese explained:
Chris Evans popping up as Human Torch in Deadpool 2 would’ve been a great way to poke fun at the team’s troubled movie history and maybe even get fans excited about the franchise’s future. With the Disney and Fox deal looming, rumors have been swirling that the Fantastic Four could be rebooted again, but this time within the MCU. If that happens, it’s unlikely Chris Evans will be involved in any way as the actor has been very open about wanting to leave the role of Captain America behind after Avengers 4.
“No, no, we never got that far [to ask Evans]. Someone had the idea we actually did and we thought that was better. But we definitely had a lot more X-Force interviews with bizarre, random people coming in to interview.”
On the other hand, Evans appearing as Human Torch could’ve been a little too distracting, even for a Deadpool movie. Although Fox owns the movie rights to Fantastic Four and the X-Men, the two properties have remained entirely separate from each other. But, if there was any way for this cameo to happen, it would be in Deadpool 2, especially since the character has never been too concerned with continuity given the character’s fourth-wall breaking nature.
At the moment, there aren’t any announced plans for a new Fantastic Four reboot, and the scene could’ve been interpreted by casual moviegoers as confirmation of another film. There’s also a very real chance that the cameo would’ve just confused people as to why a character from a decade old movie was showing up in Deadpool 2 - or even why Captain America was in a Fox movie.
