DC and Vertigo’s The Kitchen has added even more actors to its cast. The Irish mob drama comic book adaptation has now cast Common and James Badge Dale, among others. This is the second bout of casting news coming out of the film’s pre-production in as many days. Harry Potter and Star Wars star Domhnall Gleeson was added to the cast as a hitman with scores to settle just this past Monday.

The Kitchen is based on a DC/Vertigo comic book series that follows the lives of women married into the Irish mob. Set in 1970s New York, the story explores what happens when these ladies take over the “family business” after their husbands end up in the slammer. It turns out, the wives are more brutal and violent than the husbands… so, girl power, we guess? Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, and Tiffany Haddish have been cast to play the three brutal mob wives at the center of the story. Margo Martindale, Bill Camp, and Brian d’Arcy James round out the rest of the cast.

According to Deadline, Common (John Wick: Chapter 2), James Badge Dale (13 Hours), Jeremy Bobb (Elementary), and Myk Watford (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit) have now joined the cast of The Kitchen. Once his deal is finalized, Common will be portraying FBI agent Gary Silvers. There doesn’t seem to be any word on whether or not the character will be a by the book sort of cop, or if he will be secretly involved in the mafia in some way.

Meanwhile, Badge Dale will be playing Kevin O’Carroll, a mob boss married to Ruby (played by Haddish). Bobb will play Claire’s (Moss) husband, Rob Walsh, a particularly violent mobster. Watford will be playing Little Jackie. Little Jackie is a member of the mob who attempts to step up and take control after the men are imprisoned. This will likely put him directly at odds with the women in The Kitchen as they assume their violent form of control.

Micheal De Luca (The Social Network) is producing the film for Warner Bros. Academy Award nominee Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) will be writing and directing the film. Berloff previously expressed her excitement over the women-driven source material behind the film, calling the story’s treatment of the women “unapologetic.” This will be Berloff’s first time directing a full-length film.
