DC Universe will bring its slate of original programming, including Titans and Doom Patrol, to San Diego Comic-Con 2019. The streaming subscription service’s presence at the convention comes at a time when there is a lot of speculation about its future, with some in the industry even believing that its demise is close at hand.
After the immediate cancellation of Swamp Thing after its first episode, it seems that DC Universe is undoubtedly having some issues. Although the company never gave an official reason for the cancellation, especially considering how well-received the series is, some in the industry began to question if the decision was due to the show’s budget or an issue with a state grant. However, the decision could be due to something a little more complicated. WarnerMedia, DC’s parent company, recently announced its own plans to start a streaming subscription service and some believe that DC Universe’s content might eventually be rolled into that. Whatever the case, subscribers have become worried.
However, despite these worries, DC Universe will have a significant presence at SDCC 2019. Deadline reports the service is bringing its original series Titans, Doom Patrol, Young Justice: Outsiders and the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series to the event. The panel, which will feature stars and creators from all four shows, will begin on Saturday, July 20 at 7 p.m. in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront and run for two hours. For those who are fans of DC Daily, there’s a panel with the show’s hosts on Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m. in Room 9. DC Universe will also offer other unique experiences to SDCC attendees.
In addition to the canceled Swamp Thing, one original DC Universe series is missing from the SDCC line-up. Although Stargirl is currently in production, the streaming subscription service doesn’t seem to have plans to promote it at this year’s event. DC Universe initially announced Stargirl at SDCC 2018, so it seems strange that the streaming service isn’t devoting any of its time at the 2019 event to it, although Stargirl is not set to premiere until 2020.
Of its two live-action series to appear at SDCC, only one, Titans, has received a season 2 renewal. DC Universe has made no such announcement about Doom Patrol, though, but the series is a hit with fans and critics alike. Doom Patrol’s presence at SDCC could signal that such an announcement is forthcoming. DC Universe’s presence at SDCC should also help alleviate its subscribers’ fears about its future and potential fate.
