Ava DuVernay, director of DC’s New Gods, revealed on Twitter that she is hard at work on the script and might take fan suggestions into account when casting the film. DuVernay’s involvement with New Gods was announced back in 2018, around the time her previous theatrical release A Wrinkle in Time hit theaters. She then went on to direct the Netflix miniseries When They See Us, which earned a great deal of critical praise and awards nominations.

Last May, Eisner-winning comic writer Tom King was tapped to co-write the New Gods screenplay with DuVernay. Since then, there has been little news surrounding the project, beyond the inclusion of infamous DC villain Darkseid and his all-female warrior group The Furies. In the comics, the New Gods are a race of god-like beings who live on New Genesis and Apokolips. They were created by comic legend Jack Kirby. Some of the most well-known New Gods include Big Barda (who is expected to be in the film because she is DuVernay’s favorite superhero) and Mister Miracle.

On Twitter, DuVernay shared a little update on the film’s progress. In addition to confirming she’s still working on the script with King, she confessed she “may in fact be taking some notes” on different fan castings that have been shared with her. No actors have even been rumored for the project, so the possibilities are endless. A quick glance at the replies to her tweet show one popular choice is Oscar Isaac for the role of Mister Miracle, as well as Gwendoline Christie for Big Barda. Check out DuVernay’s tweet below.

New Gods has yet to secure a release date, but it could get one as soon as the script and castings are finished. DC films are entering an interesting phase as Warner Bros. moves away from completely focusing on a connected universe. While upcoming films like Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 are still set within the DCEU, next year’s The Batman will stand apart, similar to how Joker did last year. It’s unclear if DuVernay’s New Gods will be set in the DCEU.

DuVernay is one of the most interesting filmmakers out there right now, and her involvement with the New Gods film can’t help but stir up excitement. She has already shared her passion for the material online, showing she’s an excellent choice to bring the all-powerful New Gods characters to the big screen. It’s too early to say, but more news surrounding New Gods could emerge later this year, possibly at San Diego Comic-Con. Regardless of when the next piece of info comes out, it’s clear the project is still moving forward in a good direction.
