Springing from the success of Arrow and The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will unite a slew of second-string heroes (and a few villains) from those previous series into one legendary team. They aren’t quite the Justice League, but they’re certainly the closest The CW can come without stepping on DC and Warner Bros’ bigger plans (read: the DCEU).
This week both Arrow and The Flash continued playing their part in setting up Legends, featuring the origins of Hawkman and Hawkgirl as well as introducing the villainous immortal, Vandal Savage. Earlier in their seasons, White Canary was resurrected, The Atom rescued, and Dr. Martin Stein merged with Jax in order to become a new Firestorm. And with just about all the necessary players in place, Legends of Tomorrow is ready for its mid-season premiere.
With the team in place and all members accounted for, Legends of Tomorrow gets a brand new poster that manages to cram everyone in. Take a look:
Clearly, those in The CW’s design department are struggling to fit each member of the Legends team on the poster and still have it appear interesting and dynamic. While not nearly as static as the groupings on crowded Marvel posters, there is something jarring about having the team spring from one corner. With everyone angled in such a way, it’s difficult to look at the poster without tilting your head to re-adjust.
Regardless, their point remains straightforward - this is a show with a lot of heroes (and again, a few villains). The massive team-up has been Legends’ selling point from the get go, and though we’ve seen some of these characters interacting on either Arrow or Flash, we have yet to see them all together on screen. The Arrow and Flash crossovers have certainly touched on superhero team-ups, but it’s been nothing of this scale. Hopefully, Legends makes good use of each and every member, otherwise the need for so many characters comes across as nothing more than a cheap ploy.
The Flash season 2’s Fall Finale, ‘Running to Stand Still’, airs on The CW next Tuesday, December 8th, followed by the Arrow season 4 Fall Finale, ‘Dark Waters’, on December 9th. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premieres on The CW on Thursday, January 21st, 2016.
