There has long been a trend that big-budget films are often overlooked when it comes to gaining awards recognition. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King helped break this a bit, as did Heath Ledger’s win for The Dark Knight, but there has not been many “summer blockbusters” since to claim Oscar nominations, let alone a win. Well, Suicide Squad can now boast to be among that group.
During tonight’s Oscars, Suicide Squad won the award for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. The film, while divisive amongst critics and general audiences, was a financial success for Warner Bros. and DC Films. And now, director David Ayer has offered praise to those responsible for the win.
Ayer took to Twitter to congratulate the departments that handling makeup and hairstyling. Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson were present at the ceremony to accept the award.

Even in a category with only three nominees, it is no small feat for Suicide Squad to take home an Oscar. Regardless of what anyone thinks of the film’s quality, it is hard to criticize the hair and makeup departments. Whether it was Harley Quinn or Joker’s more regular style makeup designs or something more complex like El Diablo’s many tattoo’s or Killer Croc’s realistic look, these departments are deserving of winning Suicide Squad an Oscar.
While Doctor Strange could not make superhero movies two for two this year after being nominated for Best Visual Effects (and losing to The Jungle Book), it is always nice to see these movies get recognition in any category. Hopefully as the quality of these movies continue to be top notch, Academy voters will begin to recognize these films in other categories that are typically deemed more significant.
There was a large following that believed Ryan Reynolds deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance as the Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool, but that did not come to fruition, and the same goes for the film’s chances of getting recognition for its script. These films could receive more recognition if the Academy expands their awards for stunts or any number of other categories that become more prevalent. However, hopefully the Oscars will begin to give these films (when deserving) nominations for Best Picture, Actor/Actress, and more. With casts like Black Panther or Aquaman on the horizon, that could be possible, but only time will tell what the future holds for superhero movies and the Oscars.
